How do I explain being fired?

I was fired from my last job for low performance. I've never been fired before. I'm looking for a new job now and when I've been putting on my applications that I was fired (at about 40 different companies), I haven't received a single response. I started playing with it and putting I was still employed, and now people are contacting me to interview. This is sooooo awkward. Do I lie on the application to get the interview in person then tell them the truth then? I'm afraid if I just keep applying as fired no one will give me a chance...

Why was your performance low? I was let go from a job because of a big mistake that I made and didn't correct. But the ultimate cause was working too many hours and simultaneously having a crisis in my personal life. So when talking about it in interviews going forward, I always say that I needed to work somewhere that didn't require 60+ hour work weeks. I don't lie because that is never good in an interview. And as a hiring manager I would never hire someone caught in a lie.

Do not lie. You might say there was restructuring, poor work life balance, or the companies long term goals weren’t lining up with where you saw yourself going with your career.
