I love Stephanie's ideas and my best tip is to think of networking as friend-making. Like, don't have the first QUESTION you ask me SO WHAT DO YOU DO? (I wrote an entire blog post about why I hate this question). Get to know them the way you would a new friend, with curiosity and openness. And always follow up on LinkedIn!

Be open to meeting anyone! Network with coffee meetings or happy hours! Some of those conversations make for the best opportunities.

Agree! I think part of successful networking is being open to all sorts of opportunities. You never know how you or a contact may benefit each other later on.

I have a hard time remembering names when I'm networking, and I learned that the trick is to say the person's name three times. Once after they introduce themselves (e.g. "Hi Joyce! I'm Stephanie."), again in the conversation (e.g. "That's so interesting, Joyce. What does that entail?"), and one more time at the end (e.g. "It was so nice to meet you, Joyce. Let's stay in touch!) Saying their name at all not only helps you remember it, but lets the person know that you're present and you *see* them. You're pulling them — not just anybody in the room — into the conversation. That's one. And two! — I love sending thank you notes! Handwritten > email (if it's after a conference or event) but always an immediate email after an interview — even if informational.

I am trying a new thing: When I think of someone I send them an email or a text just to say hi and see how they are. It takes like two minutes and is a good way to keep up with contacts.

Joyce, in your career field, I would look into entrepreneur meet-ups. It is also beneficial to reach out blindly on Linked In and introduce yourself to people in your industry in the local area. See what they are doing and who they are interacting with. Then, send a quick note and connection request and find ways to get involved. I have made so many of my connections by volunteering with like-minded folks. Good luck! :)
