Reliance on others who take advantage

This is just a rant about how much I hate having to rely on on others due to being a single disabled veteran with no family or friends. It just sets me up for being ripped off at every turn. I recently had to move out of an apartment that caused me to develop asthma for the first time in my life. The owners of the fourplex rent to college students and I wanted to save money after my previous complex raised the rent too high. I discovered, after moving in, that the new owners were absentee landlords, always in Europe and no one minded their property. Sewage odors were coming from the heating vent and after complaining daily via phone they told me that if I didn't like it to move. A much better situation came available so I abandoned the unit. I hired a moving company because I am a disabled veteran with limited mobility. I am not a stupid person, I am in graduate school and I work full time. I thought I had a good moving company, they were on Angie's list and had perfect reviews, but they took advantage of my sickness (I also had flu) and desperation to get out of my old place. My furniture was damaged and broken, my belongings were shoved and manhandled into unmarked boxes so I can't find anything, items are missing and the owners are refusing to speak with me and are ghosting me. So now I have to take legal action, which will probably not amount to anything, while starting up graduate school this week and working and trying to get my health back. I am living in a mess because I don't have help to unpack or get anything set up. It seems that no matter what business I deal with, how much I research them, I just run into being taken advantage of. I have yet to find one honest business in the past several years, and it is getting worse. Business has been emboldened to harm, and steal as much from people as possible and get away with bad products and services. Everyone wants to emulate the wealthy and wants to get rich like they did. This currently means lying, cheating and stealing are good now, because that is how the current wealthy became billionaires, and doing the right thing is bad because being good is evil now (God only blesses the rich, so if you are poor it means God is displeased you). I want to go to Europe so badly and escape the hell America has become. I am above the age of being allowed to immigrate, but I so wish I could escape!

I'm sorry that you are going through a rough time. Hopefully, it's short-lived and you can find some joy in your new start ( grad school). Hang in there.

So sorry this happened to you! Have you tried contacting the VA? It appears they sometimes help with legal affairs: https://www.va.gov/ogc/legalservices.asp

Chrysiarose, I am so very sorry that you’ve encountered these difficulties. We all hit rough patches. When I’ve hit tough periods in my life, here are some strategies that have helped me: -Add a pleasant activity or activities to your life, and make these a trouble-free zone. These can be as simple or complex as you like: savoring a cup of your favorite tea, finding a park or a garden or a museum to relax in, listening to music, adding a new hobby to your schedule. Anything is fine, as long as you enjoy it. The point is to shift your perspective into a new, happier zone, and realizing that happiness is as valid as anger or discouragement and far better for you. See what you can do to expand your zone of happiness daily. -Practice gratitude daily by making a list of everything that has gone right each day. Again, this brings your mind to a happier place. -If possible, be open to the possibility of meeting other good people. Understood that this does not always happen readily, but know that the uncaring people you’ve encountered are not the only ones out there. -If you can’t shake your anger and unhappiness by yourself, see if you can undertake some counseling. Your grad school might offer a low cost option, and the VA might be helpful, too. There is also the possibility that medication might be helpful— millions of Americans are helped by anti-depressants or anti-anxiety meds. -Focus on the good aspects of your life. You are employed and you are in graduate school. That suggests that your life will be changing for the better, even if it’s hard work now. I wish you happiness, good fortune and the fulfillment of your wishes for yourself.
