How do I transition to next chapter?

I have been in the mental health field for about 20 years and have lost my passion and have compassion burn out. I have found that I want to move on to my next chapter but don't know how to go about it. I still want to work with people and have desire to make changes that are positive for others as well as myself. I see many positions posted for my current role but feel no spark to pursue further. Would appreciate any feedback. Thank you

I'm currently looking to switch careers. One thing I did this past summer was to reach out to my network and find people who work within the field I'm trying to get into. I asked if I could job shadow for the role I want to be in. I did this to see what the day to day would look like and if that is really what I want to do. I asked a LOT of questions and even had one of the people I shadowed give me advice on my LinkedIn profile. I found out that it was the right position. So, knowing that helped me develop my next step which was to make sure my LinkedIn profile reflected those skills and that advice same with my resume.

The important thing is that you realize you want and need a change. Some people never recognize that, and just muddle along without any passion. There are practical things you can do, as others have suggested, but in my experience, the best thing to do is to be mindful and open to possibilities. When your mind is open, you will soon start to notice opportunities that sound or look exciting. Follow the clues! Good luck in your journey!

Switching careers and industries is always interesting and has its own set of challenges...there are many articles on HBR (Harvard Business Review) about this subject - I would check them out when you can. The great news is, mental health has so many incredible transferable skill sets. I'd look for anything in "service" or HR. The hard thing about a move like this is knowing that you will most likely need to take a step back in terms of title, compensation, scope of responsibility, etc. I'm sure you're already well aware of that, but it's important to keep in mind when you complete applications.

start looking at other career fields to see where your skillset would be a complement. Create a focused resume based on your skillset (or have someone or an agency create one for you). Start sending resumes and see what comes back. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain from this experience. Good luck!

Thank you. I have sent resumes out but get no response. It is frustrating but maybe I need to base resume, as you have said, on skillset. thanks

you can also wait about a week and then call the organizations you have sent resumes and ask them what the status is, etc.

Think about all the skills you have developed in your career- in what other fields could those skills be useful? What other skills, passions, gifts and abilities do you have or feel a desire to develop? As a personal coach, I have found having clients journal through all of this helpful as they discern their next best steps. You have so much to give others, when you are reignited in your passion. What is your “dream job” ?

Thank you. My dream job would be in helping animals or people work toward positive change. Just don't know how to apply for jobs when they ask for experience in those fields.

Since you have so much experience, have you considered NGO's? Don't know about your personal life, but maybe if you are stationed in another country, you could still find pleasure working in your field?
