Lost my job, but my glass is half full

I lost my job on Friday. I was actually fired. First time in my life that I have ever been fired. I was told that I wasn't learning fast enough and made too many mistakes while entering data into the proprietary computer system. I was at this company for 8 months. I have about 2 months until I "have" to start working as I have two in college come August. My resume is all over the place because of the myriad of work I have done over the past 20 years. Any resume writing/proofing people/companies that are legitimate and that can help a 50+ professional gal out?

Thank you so much for the responses everyone! I worked with a resume writer last year and am using a terrific new template. I'm truly optimistic, and am now in the process of reaching out to some folks that I used to work with on LinkedIn. I will keep you all updated.

I'm sorry that you are in this position. My "my resume-doesn't-seem-to-be-working-anymore" story: A few years ago, I figured that my resume was not telling the right story about me anymore. I started to tweak and tinker with the words, but nothing was working. For the first time ever, I reached out to a few resume writer/career peeps, interviewed three of them and ended up hiring a great person (careerbenders.com <-- Angie is great.) My ask for Angie was this: "Make my resume read like I was a 50 year old white guy with grey hair who everyone wants to hire because of their experience and no one considers their age" and she delivered a cleaner and more focused, accomplishment-focused resume. It was a painful process for me because I wanted to list everything that i worked on (cause that's what a resume is right?) but Angie told me that I only needed 10-15 years. It was tough to chop off some of the ground-breaking projects that I lead in the early days of the internet. I'm happy to share my before and after resume if you want to take a look at the differences. AND My startup (I am a co-founder and COO) will need a strong marketing person in about a month. I'm happy to chat about what we need and what your skills sets are to see if you are a fit and you are interested. Let me know!

Michelle, this is a blessing in disguise. Figure out the top 3 career choices You Want over the next 3 yrs. Create 3 resumes highlighting the transferable skills And Accomplishments Earned within each career option. Same info on each resume. Just showing each company how You will be an asset to them Before you go to their competitor

Also, please excuse any typos. I am guilty of voice to text! I would be happy to either help you create and or proofread your resume for absolutely no charge. I charged for creating them years ago but having a new, happy contact is much more fulfilling! :)

First of all, I am so sorry that that happened to you and I really hope that you don't take it personally! Try to remember that termination is just as biased as hiring. First thing is did your manager or company give you any indication that a termination was forthcoming? Did you at any point receive corrective action or write-ups regarding this issue? Because if you did not, then it's not really a fair term so I would absolutely file and fight for unemployment to get you through until you find something else. That is your personal choice but there are very few scenarios in which you would not win if they did not give you corrective action. Also, please just don't take it personal. It can be such a hit to the confidence to be fired but one person's perception has absolutely no bearing on who you are as a person, personally or professionally! Now, in regards to the resume that you're talking about. I see that you are in marketing. Coming from someone who went from a career in HR to digital marketing, I would encourage you to compile your resume and your perception as you would encourage a client. The first thing you would tell your marketing client is to pick a niche. That is the single most important thing you can do for your career. Are you interested in outside, print marketing? Digital marketing? Social media management or content marketing? Pick a niche and highlight all of the experience in that Niche and then add any supporting experience. If you want someone to look at your resume, I would be happy to do so. And, depending on you are passion and what your goals are, it might be an amazing time to go freelance. If that is something that appeals to you, with everyone working remotely, there are dozens and dozens of sites to find online marketing work wear sometimes you are an actual employee or you may work on contract. I had an amazing contract career but it could be scary sometimes because you just can't control other people so you never know when you might lose a client for no reason. That can be stressful but the rewards of, as hard as you work as much as you'll make, can be tremendously fulfilling. Again, I'm really sorry that especially in this climate that you lost your job but it doesn't reflect on who you are. If there are things that you can change if you feel as though they had any valid concerns, but now is a good time to work on that too. We all have things that we can do better but just don't let it shake your confidence. Please don't hesitate to reach out if I can help you in any way! In the meantime, consider your niche and especially in what field in Industries you could start making an impact in. Best of luck to you! Michelle
