Laid off back in February 2024 and haven’t been able to find a new job. How do I address this on my resume without looking unhireable?
In the early months following my layoff I was honest on my resume about when the job ended but as the months progressed and I was still unemployed the interviews started to dry up. I had a recruiter tell me that I should stretch the employment date or imply that I was still employed so that I’d look more appealing to hiring managers. I know this is bad advice and unethical but I took her advice and all of a sudden I was getting interview requests again. Unfortunately, none of those interviews turned into job offers, though.
I don’t want to lie on my resume because I know that if I do get an offer and there’s a BG check I’ll be screwed. So how do I remain honest on my resume without appearing unhireable to hiring managers?
I’ve been trying like hell to find a job and I just can’t land one! I have over 10 years of experience in the marketing industry and a Master’s degree but it feels like none of that matters. My unemployment benefits are about to end and I just feel so hopeless. I don’t know what to do anymore or how to make myself seem more appealing to hiring managers. Any advice?

Never lie on a resume. Employers respect those who are honest. But I have a sincere question: What have you been doing with your time since the layoff? (aside from applying for jobs)? Fill this time with VOLUNTEER work. And you can list this o your resume (i.e, March 2024- present: Volunteer in marketing at blah blah blah organization), "mentoring" activities at Community College, take a class on Linked In, Library, anything to show tht you are still MOVING ahead. When I lost my full time job, I decided that I was going to pursue volunteering at a woman's homeless shelter. (it was something i wanted to do anyway, so now I had the time)- Ended up making some great friends there , helped with expanding my network and overall life experience. Do these things to "fill" your resume, friend. Chin up. it's terrible out there right now.
