Can speaking with recruiters in a general, get-to-know-you sense help land a job?
I recently began working on my job search. I've spoken with four recruiters (from both small and large firms, I vetted each one) in 30-60 minute sessions where we go over my resume, professional experience, and goals for my next career move. They supposedly then go through their catalog of openings, "present" me where appropriate, and keep my info "on file" for when they have a role to fill that is a match. It's been about 3 months since these initial conversations, and I've had zero interviews. My resume was professionally redone before sending to the recruiters, and I got a lot of positive/enthusiastic feedback from the recruiters, though maybe they say good things to everyone. I'm willing to be patient, and it doesn't cost anything other than some of my time. I have followed up with each one, but they all have said "nothing yet, but I haven't forgotten you." I'm not in a highly specialized industry or role. My question is, has anyone on here actually gotten a job in a similar scenario to what I've described? Thanks so much!

It's good for recruiters to have you in their files but until they need you, you won't hear from them. They need a job to put you up for. When you are a variable candidate, they will contact you. Look at all ways to find a job, network, network, network!!!

It’s good to build relationships with recruiters because you never know where that can lead, but it shouldn’t be your only avenue. Apply to roles directly on the company’s website, and network with folks in person and/or on LinkedIn. Upload your resume to and set up alerts through several different job boards. If you have specific companies in mind to target, reach out to folks who work there and ask for an informational interview. Building relationships that way could get you a referral. If you don’t have specific companies in mind, consider doing some company research to identify your top companies. It doesn’t mean you’ll only take a job if it’s with one of those companies, but it’ll be good to have a baseline of what you’re looking for to evaluate other companies. Good luck to you!
