Hello Everyone,
I've recently come to the realization that if something isn't working like the job hunt, then perhaps it's not the right place or time to look for that particular position.
The action of pivoting (even just slightly) can be so important.
I'm in the business of doing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work and feel that as a white woman I need to speak to and learn with other white people to really move the needle toward change. Sometimes figuring out where you can do the most good and the least harm can be daunting. Undoing whiteness is a lifelong journey. I have been on the job hunt after feeling like consulting was too uncertain. However, after applying to many different DEI leadership positions and going through a lengthy interview process, and not getting the job, I realized that perhaps I need to pivot my focus. There's a reason something isn't working out and instead of beating myself up, I need to pivot my gaze onto something that is more within my reach or immediate control. So, although I really value being a DEI consultant, I have felt that focusing more broadly on women's issues with a DEI lens is where I think my talents and expertise would be better suited. Already, that small shift has opened up more doors to other opportunities that had I kept applying to corporate jobs, that wouldn't have come to fruition.
Pema Chodron's (a Buddhist nun) work has been where I turn when I need some spiritual guidance. From Pema Chodron's Compassion Cards: Teachings for awakening the heart in everyday life", card #53 states, "If you train in awakening compassion only some of the time, it will slow down the process of giving birth to certainty. Wholeheartedly train in keeping your heart and mind open to everyone." I think this message helps solidify the work I want to do in the world with the actions that come with that intent.
Perhaps there is something that is simply not working for you and just a small pivot can open up other opportunities that you didn't even know were available. I'm finding way more traction in this new line of thinking and acting. Maybe you will too.
Good luck out there,
Dr. Joy

Dr. Joy, this is an amazing insight. It can be so difficult to accept that something isn't working, or to interrogate our efforts in a certain calling. But it can also be freeing and open us up to what's best for us! I'm thankful to hear you say that. As they say... when one door closes, another opens. Wishing you the best on your journey and let the Community know how we can help!

I really appreciate this perspective, Dr. Joy! Thank you for sharing. How long do you think it takes before you need to shift your direction or open yourself to new opportunities?
