Increasing desired salary ask?

Had a great phone interview! When asked about salary, I quoted a number higher than what I currently make but definitely at the lower end of the salary range this employer would probably offer... this company is MUCH bigger than my current one, and the position would involve some relocation (within state though). I am hoping to have a second interview coming up... I am tempted to increase my desired salary ask to a number that is still in the lower bracket of what they offer, but is about 8% higher than what I mentioned in the first interview. Any thoughts on how to do this gracefully & professionally?

Your greatest negotiating power is at the time of offer so you may want to wait as you interview to ensure the job/company meets your holistic needs then ask away! Best wishes for success in your interview process!

If, as you said above, your new salary requirement is still within their bracket, then up your request. If they ask why you increased your ask, you can say that you did some research and you feel better with your new salary request. I am a manager and I would respect an interviewee who asked for more when our range allowed it. In fact, I have offered more than what was asked for by interviewee, if that interviewee is worth the top of the pay range, then I pay the top of the pay range.

Great advice! You can also back up the request after you've had additional interviews, in which you will have learned more about the responsibilities & scope of the role; then, the higher salary requirement might feel more appropriate given the work you'd be doing.

Thanks! I did do some research ahead of time, but I didn't realize quite how big the staff is at this particular location... appreciate the feedback : )
