Dear Empathetic Leader

Dear empathetic leaders, I see you. I know you’re listening to your people. Deeply. I know you’re reaching out and asking how they’re really doing. I know you’re arranging the supplies they need. I even know you’ve sent people treats to bring good cheer. I also know you’ve told some people that it’s ok if they’re not working quite as hard as they used to, as they get adjusted to having the kids around or being lonely. And I know that you’ve lost track of when you’re working and when you’re not, because it all feels like one endless project. So, dear empathetic leaders, I want to say: Please, take a self-care break. It’s unlikely that your people will tell you that. And even if they do, you’re likely to keep pushing through. So let this be your reminder that you, too, deserve a break. Today, set aside some time for yourself. For a walk. Or a cup of tea. Or turn on some music and take a dance break. Step away from the work for 5 or 10 minutes. Turn your attention inward. To you. And ask yourself what you need. And then, give that to yourself. Thanks, Susan PS - If you’re a leader struggling with burnout because you care so much about your team and don't feel like you have time or energy for yourself, reach out.

Thanks for sharing this, Susan. I really needed to read it right now. I'm trying very hard to do and be all these things for my team while still making sure we meet our goals. It's been very draining for myself, so I appreciate these words very much. I am literally on my PTO/mental health day today, so this was a nice post to come across.
