I have been in the Technology industry for 22 years. I have seen different companies have different titles for similar roles.
But here is the question I have, how do these job title play when applying for next job.
I recently had couple of situations that made me question the job title:
1. There is a technology group I would like to join but they allow only "VP" and above level folks as per their unsaid rule.
2. I applied for a job role that needs leadership experience which I have but never had the titles like Director. This particular job wants only folks who have atleast 5 yrs of Director or above title.
3. I recently rejected a job since the company had folks half of my experience at the same title. I loved the role the company but the title was not clear enough to show my seniority within the company.
So for the folks with non traditional job roles like in Software industry, what are your thoughts about the "Job titles"
A senior development manager at a company is same as "Director" at another and so forth.
