Little-known tips to massively propel your career

No matter where you are in your career, your goal should always be to strive toward progress and your big next step. Whether you're just starting out or making a career transition later in life, here are some tips to launch your career forward. 1. Build a core mentorship group. Surround yourself with mentors within your professional and personal life who can help you along the way and provide all kinds of feedback and encouragement. 2. Make yourself visible. Go to happy hour or that extra work event — it won't go unnoticed. 3. Network with people in similar roles both inside and outside of your industry. Collaborate and share knowledge from your experience; this will help you learn new strategies for current and future jobs. 4. Establish a good working relationship with not only your manager, but your manager's boss. This can help you get more opportunities company wide. 5. Make sure you're getting the basics right. Be on time, ask questions, pay attention, and get your work done before the deadline. What other little-known tips have helped you take the next step in your career?

I feel like these are all critical to career progression. A senior manager in my department recently gave me advise on how to build a relationship with my direct senior manager. His acronym is p.i.e. performance, image, exposure. Are you meeting or exceeding the PA metrics? What is your brand/how do your colleagues and management view you? What are you doing to stay visible while working remote? He also stressed the importance of a mentor; investing in someone who truly has your best interest at heart and you can take honest raw feedback from. Networking has been very beneficial for me while we transition to working remote as well. I have been able to work with departments I wasn't given the opportunity to with back in our office and bridge the gaps between our work.

These are all great tips! To add on to being visible, offer to participate in brainstorms or if schedules allow, take on projects outside of your core role or with different teams to expand your skill sets and working relationships. You never know if this could open up future opportunities too!

Establishing a good working relationship with your boss and his or her boss is critical! Recently, I was moved to another team because of this. We had two customer projects long over due, and when asked who was the best person to fix these projects, they both separately recommended me - as did a few other managers I have worked on projects with or have worked for inthe past. In addition, having your boss’s boss in your court could come in handy when your boss leaves.

Great advice......I would add... "Always be learning" - stay on top of the "future of work" and "your industry" "Don't take things personally" - in my experience - if someone is a bully - you aren't the only one experiencing this behavior - don't let it get to you. "Be solution focused - dream big" - don't be afraid to tackle problems to the ground

Figure out what your strengths are and capitalize on them! I have seen way too many books, presentations, courses that solely focus on your areas of weakness, but there’s only so much you can improve a weakness and it’s going to take a lot to make it a strength. Focus equally if not more on finding your strengths and making them better. For example I am not very assertive by nature but I am good at building relationships. A big part of my job is basically telling people what to do, and when I approach that from a place of trying to be more assertive, not only am I uncomfortable but it just doesn't work very well. When instead I focus on building solid relationships with my coworkers it is much easier to leverage that rapport to get work done.
