I'm debating whether I should send a follow-up email for an interview I had recently for a job at the university I attended.
The reason I'm not sure is that I have a friend at the university in an adjacent department who warned me that they take forever in the hiring process (her words). The interviewer, who would be my supervisor, also said that it could take a while for the university to approve an offer before he would be able to make it. I think the interview went well and I don't want to blow my chances by annoying him with an email when I know it's a long hiring process. It's been three weeks. I was not given any time frame for hearing back. Any advice?

How long has it been since the interview, and have you followed up with a thank you email already? I think that'd be a great place to start.

It's been three weeks. I did send a thank you email the day after the interview.

Three weeks is a good point at which to reach out.

I would definitely follow up, but frame it as a very enthusiastic "Just checking in". I would keep it short and pleasant. I would also mention I am very interested in the position. Good luck!
