(I am the original poster) Thank you ALL for your perspectives; they all help. My situation is a bit more nuanced than I perhaps described; but nonetheless, I did decide to turn this one current opportunity down, and keep looking. I am in a relatively 'hot' field (data analyst/tech related) and amazingly enough (given my age), I seem to be doing well with job applications garnering interest; lots of interviews, suddenly! I am going to keep looking, and try to find an employer willing and able to offer me something more in line with my total experience and skillset.

As a contractor some of that is in the nature of the fact that its contract work- contract work pays more because you assume the liability of insurance, benefits, 401k etc. so its normal to have a compensation package that is lower for a w2 position. HOWEVER if you are in any of the high demand positions (say is this a data analyst or scientist role?) in stem fields you might consider remote jobs as well. You may be shooting yourself in the financial foot by applying to in person positions in places that pay based on location and the location you want has a lower overall pay for your field. You can leverage this if you prefer in person by not advertising to the future employer that you intend on moving- and if they bring it up ask "do you offer relocation assistance if you need me to work in person?" If you apply to a remote position there they will pay you on your current demographic and you may end up with a much higher wage plus relocation funds.
