I currently work in a dangerous industrial job. I really like the work, however, if I do not know how to do something safely, of course, I ask.
However, sometimes, when I ask a question, some bosses (but not all) take it…

I was in a somewhat similar position - my manager resigned and asked me to take her job on an interim basis right around the holidays. I asked about compensation and she said she was sure it would be increased but her manager would need to figure that out. Due to holidays, it was a few weeks before we were able to chat and meanwhile, I was leading the team.
But as soon as we were able to meet, they increased my compensation and made it retroactive.
All that to day, assuming you trust your employer, I'd do the work and as soon as your manager comes back, discuss pay. If anything, you can justify even more comp by knocking it out if the park and showing how valuable you are.

Have you officially accepted the position? I would think they would have had to make you an offer that would have stated the new salary. It sounds like you are just doing vacation coverage right now and haven't officially moved into the role. I honestly doubt they're planning on making anything official until after your boss comes back from vacation. I would just suck it up and wait to address it until after your boss is back (and has had time to get caught up on things). If you're still doing the job after they get back and it's been like a week or so then it's fair to approach your boss about it. You can also contact HR and try to feel things out. Generally, they'll want everything in writing so there would have been an official offer. But, like I said, it sounds like you are just doing vacation coverage. They might also be testing you to make sure you can handle the role. Treat it like a really long interview. It doesn't sound like the new position is locked in yet.

OP here. The thing is the CEO, HR, and the rest of our company is already referring to me as my new role and moving forward as if I will be in this role permanently. It just feels weird having the responsibility publicly dumped on me without any behind the scenes things solidified, and makes me nervous they’d expect me to take on the extra work and conveniently “forget” about the raise my manager mentioned.
