I had a phone interview for (what I thought was) a Coordinator role. I was very excited because I have been applying to different roles since May with no callbacks.
I recently worked with a friend who is a recruiter to edit my resume, so when this company reached out, I was so excited my resume was finally getting some well-deserved attention! I looked into the company's Glassdoor and it had a 3 Star rating with many complaints about the disorder and little care for employees. I have to admit, I was nervous after reading that but I still wanted to give them a chance.
Phone Interview Day.
When I connected with the company's recruiter for my phone interview we start to have a really great chat about the role (which she did not name out loud) and what some of the responsibilities were. I was a little concerned because the role sounded nothing like the one I applied to. In fact, the one she was describing to me sounded more like a retail sales associate position which was not at all like any of the roles I applied for. I started to notice keywords like the job was "seasonal and part-time" just in time for the "holiday" I was very confused. I asked her whether we were both talking about the same role I applied for which was an administrative role. She said that role I asked about had "already been filled" but it looks like I had applied to "more than one role in the company". (I rarely ever do this because I've heard it gives recruiters the idea you are just sending your resume to every open role without care).
I had looked through my confirmation emails and did not see any sign of applying for the role she called about, in fact, I wouldn't have applied for a part-time, retail position AT ALL. I don't have anything against it, but those are not the positions I am looking for.
She told me that if I got this role I'd have more of a possibility to move up into the corporate side after the holiday season, and it would help me gain experience (in an area I had over 5 years of experience already). I was kind enough to thank her and whatnot, but I already know if they reach out again I will not be interested.
I believe my resume was pulled from the stack for the other role, and thrown into this one as a "she might be desperate enough". The reason I believe that is because the recruiter even said at one point "this position might be a great way to get out of the house for some time" implying I am desperate to get out and find work.
Not sure why I decided to share this, but it has been on my mind all day since this morning and it really makes me upset. Especially because I am a woman of color who already experiences enough self-doubt and companies undervaluing my work because of how I look and where I come from.
Now I know, for future I will ask every recruiter if they are calling me about X role, as opposed to just assuming they are.
