2020 trainwreck

As a whole, 2020 has been very hard for me. I just started college this August, which in itself is amazing, but I am struggling outside of that. I was working two jobs until March when the virus caused everything to shut down, so I decided to take the first opportunity that came my way. On April 1st, I took a position at a local company. The company I agreed to work for said they HAD to put me on second shift, 3pm-1am, but that they would bend over backwards to accommodate me once I started college and I would go straight to 1st shift. I struggled with my mental health so much during that time on 2nd shift, I never saw anyone outside of those walls. Not my family, not my boyfriend, no one. I was just holding on to the thought that it would be over soon, I would get to go back to day shift. Two weeks before I was supposed to start college, I inquired as to what day would be my first day back on a normal schedule. The company claimed that they never made such promises, that they had no idea what I was talking about. I was absolutely shocked. I knew I wasn't in a good place mentally and I knew I couldn't continue the life I was living, I only get one chance and I don't want to spend this life alone when I don't have to. So I continued to push the subject, talking to as many higher-ups that I could get to. I was running on 3 hours of sleep a day, trying to manage my schoolwork, and I was still struggling mentally. Finally, the company came to a resolution. I clearly couldn't work 2nd shift, so they cut my hours. I went from working 45 hours a week, to 18 hours a week. I am a college student entirely on my own, I pay for my phone, my car, my insurance, my apartment, I am paying for college out of pocket. This was no longer livable. So, I saved as much money as I could through September, and my last day was September 21st. I am now unemployed and running out of money, I don't know how I am going to pay for anything that I have. I did not anticipate a job search being this hard, I have been turned down by so many companies I can no longer count. If anyone has any advice, please let me know

So sorry you are having such a tough year! I agree with the others on this thread. Don't forget about scholarship, financial aid and student loans to help bridge the gap. Also maybe look into gig work such as Uber, Lyft or even dog walking , tutoring -- there are some creative ways to earn money (even shopping for services like instacart). GOOD LUCK! May 2021 be your best year yet!

I agree with the advice that Morgan Myers has given you, but would also encourage you to seek counseling, that the school provides to assist you with this challenge. Your story regarding changes in hours is a reminder to everyone to get these things in writing. Include HR in these discussions too.

I'm sorry this year has been so tough for you. You're not alone and it will get better! If you're in school and you can still get loans for this semester (or pell grants), I'd recommend doing that. I know student loans aren't ideal, but in this situation, they can help alleviate some of your stress and present need, and let you focus on your studies (which will provide better earning opportunities for you later). I'd also recommend contacting your school to see if there are any work study programs available, or if they have any community partnerships to offer employment or paid internships or something similar. Hoping you're able to find something soon. This rough patch will pass, hang in there! :)
