Back at the job

I have been back at the office full time since 22 June. I must say it feels a lot better than working from home. Officially, I am now the Unit Program Coordinator AND the Unit Secretary...sigh. I am trying to remain positive that this will refresh and enhance the knowledge of jobs I used to do. I was talking to a friend and her husband last and they suggested I start looking at jobs and rebranding myself a Program Support Assistant/Specialist. They presented several good reasons: I work with the military and title sounds military. People may not understand what a UPC is or does. What I do is very similar to a Program Support Assistant/Specialist, so why not use those words. Now to figure out what rebranding is and how to do it. At least I have an extended weekend to figure it out.

I like the titles you've created. Totally agree with Emily above in terms of what are the titles in the jobs that interest you. Best of luck!

Start by taking a look at both job postings with your desired title and the social media profiles of people who already do the work. That will give you a good idea of the way this info is presented and how to speak to your skills and accomplishments. You don't even have to think of it as "branding" if that term doesn't resonate with you. You're just highlighting your skills so they're appealing to someone hiring a Program Support Specialist!

Hi Lucia, I was nodding in agreement when I read "It feels a lot better than working from home." YES!! I returned to the office on June 1st and am so happy to be back. There are those who don't find titles or branding their position important. I'm not one of these people. Having a title - and the proper one - is extremely important to me. Why? Because, for me, a title establishes my position within the company. A title gives me a purpose, a definition. And the proper title recognizes the work that I do. I'd make this a novella post if I continued - but I'll end by saying that despite what I just wrote above, I hate my current job title. Unfortunately, my company categorizes everyone into groups. And I happen to be associated Sales. I loathe anything sales related. This really is funny of me to say - since I work for a SALES/Marketing firm. And I'm in my 18th year. I continue to battle however. My goal... To eventually have this Sales based, Sales minded, Sales driven company... Realize that there are other important non sales roles that make the company successful. And theses roles are just as important - if not more so in some respects!

Lucia -- the sound of branding can feel like, what? I have to compare myself to a brand like Tide?! However it can be a fun exercise. A few things that can be helpful, you want to talk about you as a brand in a way that shows the value you can bring to a role or organization. Telling it in a way that makes you stand out and memorable is important too. Again the trick here is to brand yourself so that the person who is hiring clearly understands how you can help them. Here's a free resource that can get you started. It's called The Brand of You Creative Brief and gives you the step by step to creating your brand. Just copy and paste this link into your web browser to get access. Good luck! https://bit.ly/2xlkuOr

Awesome, I have a little list of words scribbled down and I was also looking at free classes (excel, sharepoint). Thank you

I agree with Lucia - figuring out branding can be a fun little investigative project. Absolutely looking at job postings and industry connections on LinkedIn can be a a start....what are THEIR titles....look at their resumes or skills listed. Keep track of your responsibilities tracked against key words you find in the job postings (good to do anyways for any future job hunting needs or performance evaluation conversations). When you figure out what it is YOU do and what YOU want to be known for, a key step is to get your current boss to acknowledge the title you want. Having that list of skills can come in handy for that conversation also.

Branding is extremely important to keep focusing on. There are ways to show your transferrable skills on LinkedIn and on your resume. Definitely make sure you focus on transferrable skills. If you are not sure what they are, search job postings that are similar to what you are doing and what you would like to be doing then use the terms in the postings to update your resume and LinkedIn.
