How to earn my team's trust as a newly promoted manager?

So thrilled to share that I've recently been promoted at work! While I'm so excited to start this new role, I'm definitely nervous — especially as some of my new direct reports were once co-workers. I'm worried about navigating the new power balance, as well as just hitting the ground running considering everything that's going on in the world! Employees who love their boss: What's something that your boss does that you love? For employees that don't love their boss, what's something you wished they did instead?

Love Farah's comments. I truly believe similarly following her examples of authenticity, genuine concern for team building; and consistently trying creative management approaches will gain the respect and trust of coworkers looking to grow and thrive! Godspeed, Virginia!

You don't need to be the best at everything. Acknowledge and lean on those who have expertise in areas you don't, keeping in mind that you were made the manager for a reason, and letting your direct reports shine will only reflect well on you!

First off, congratulations on your promotion! The best bosses I've had will check in with me but also trust me and the work I put out. While you may have just acquired a team of people that you didn't hire, hopefully all of them are in their positions because they know how do to their job well. Trust and communication is so key. Let them know you appreciate them and ensure they know they can reach out to you for support. On the flip side of this, the WORST thing is a micromanager. I think everyone can attest to this. It's awful to feel like you aren't worthy of your role, incompetent, etc. Some of my worst bosses want control of every little thing, which seems to prevent them from being a true leader and helping the team grow.

Value input from those who have been on the team. Work with your team and lead by example. I have found that people watch what you are doing and based upon your actions decide if they will follow your lead or rebel against your lead. Too many people think that once they promote they can stop working so hard. In any industry, this is simply not the case. In many ways, you have to work much harder - leading, being a productive member of the team, and continued learning. I am so excited for you!!! Congratulations on your accomplishment!!!!!!!

Congratulations! Authenticity and transparency can go a long way to gaining a team's trust. Behave with care and empathy. Find out what makes each team member tick. There are often easy things you can implement that will show your team that you're rooting for them.

My advice: be empathetic, engaged without micro managing, and democratic in the decisions that allow you to do so. Good luck! You’ve earned this for a reason so have trust in your abilities and talent to navigate this graciously.

Business is relationships so treat your group with kindness and respect. Get to know them individually and let them know their worth to you. Trust is mutual in a relationship.

Congratulations on your promotion! I was in a similar situation in my last role, where I went from being my teammates' colleague to managing the entire team. I had the same fears! I started off by setting up 1:1 meetings with each of them to discuss their career goals, what they're happy about and what hasn't been working for them (and I took notes!). Then I did my best to use that information to help improve the team structure and assign tasks based on each person's interest (when possible!). It helped them see pretty quickly that I'm still on their team and I want to help us all grow and work better. I also set up monthly meetings with one of my colleagues in HR for a few months so I could run any questions I had by her and temperature check my gut instincts on how to react to certain situations. That was very helpful! You're going to do a great job; just be respectful, believe in yourself and listen to your direct reports' concerns as they arise!

Ask them what you can do to help them solve pain points, speak to them about their preferences in leadership styles and adapt, and ask how you can help in their careers: I love every manager who has done this.

Respect that everyone has different styles of working and learning. You may have to learn everyone’s style individually. Meeting with each team member to discuss how they work best will create a positive relationship with you and your team.
