Sad and need to vent about possible job loss

I am currently on maternity leave. With the pandemic and both sides parents are elderly, we don't have help we normally could. We hired some part time nanny help using some savings but rest of the time the job to take care of baby falls to me, the mom. I'm not complaining about being with the baby. But my employer expects me to come back to work after 8 weeks. I don't think I'm in a position to do that and won't send my newborn to daycare this year because of all this pandemic stuff. I am getting sad I will lose my job when my 8 week maternity leave ends and I can't work like I used to. I don't think they will put me in another project. I feel for all the women who have lost their job due to the pandemic or can't go back because their employer doesn't support them in the way they need to. It will help to hear from others in the same boat.

That is very challenging, I am sorry. Unfortunately, there are a lot of women who are stepping away from the workforce for similar reasons. Check out the recent McKinsey/LeanIn Women in the Workplace 2020 report (just Google it). It is very unfortunate that your employer can't accommodate you better, but make sure you are asking for every possibility. You don't know what's available if you don't ask!

Have you talked to your spouse about your situation? Is it also possible that your spouse can take on another job or move up the ladder to bring in more income so that you can take the time off you need? I know the transition can be tough. Best of luck in your journey!
