I worked in law enforcement for 10 years in a juvenile detention center. During that period, I was bullied by the administrator nearly every day. He treated women with disrespect - and so did all of the layers of managers between him and the woman he was disrespecting. He was rude. He didn't arrive at work until nearly noon, so it didn't matter to him if we missed dinner with our family to sit through yet another endless story about the good old days. He expected that women were physically weak and helpless - and he continually told stories about how their compassion put "real" law enforcement at risk.
When the boss of such an agency is that disrespectful of women, minorities, gays, transsexuals, or other ethnicity, then the levels of managers between line staff and big boss are also full of bullies. The good old boys club needs to be permanently retired.
If you are dealing with this type of negative behavior, contact your HR department. Document what he has done, so you have chapter and verse for his disciplinary hearing. I risked the reprisals and called HR along with three other very selfless men. All of us left the agency because we knew he would try to fire us. All of us were very good at what we did, and dedicated to caring for the clients we served.
No, other than being old, I do not qualify for any of the diversity labels. I don't think that matters. What does matter is that bullies need to be stopped before the next one takes the life of someone you or I love.
