Single Mom Needs A Change

I really have to do something soon.. I have two small children, and just because I'm a single mother I do not want my children to go without. I need a career. Something that I can do and be able to afford a home of our own. A better more reliable vehicle. I want to be able to take them on vacations even if every other year or every 2 years. I'm tired of struggling..

Agree with much of the advice above. Figure out where you want to be - type of career, aspects of it (remote, etc.), and what your current skill set is. Then you can figure out how to close that gap. There was a great talk recently on how mom's can find their purpose in life on this site.

Hang in there mama. It's so hard, and even more so right now with these "uncertain times" we're in. Networking helps, sometimes you might know someone who's company is hiring and they can help bring you in.

HI Anissa -- thank you for posting this and sharing where you are at. I really applaud you for being focused on building a career so that you can provide your children with a home, vacations, etc. Do you have a sense of what kind of career you would like to pursue? Once you get clarity on that goal, you can start to reverse engineer the steps you need to take to get there and then you can start taking action. You can do this! I'm rooting for you!

Experienced LMS Administrator

Hi Anissa! I’m a single mom too. I’ve been working as an LMS (Learning Management System) Administrator for about 8 years now. If you’re computer savvy it’s a great field to be in. The job can be done fully remote and pays pretty well. I’ve actually found that I’ve been interviewing even more since the covid crisis began (there has been a bigger need for online learning). I would recommend looking for e-learning or instructional technology jobs in education. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door. Good luck!!!

Ladies I have been there and yes it is a struggle. I have 3 children all of which are now in their 20's Don't give up not matter how hard things may get. I am still single and I am working one full time job and one part time job at the moment. I have one child getting married and one about to go into senior year of undergrad college. The oldest has moved out and is honestly struggling with everything that is going on but the impact you have on your kids will last a lifetime. Try to keep them out of adult subjects until they are capable of understanding. CHIN UP and stay focused on your goals.

Patient Services/Virtual Asst in Cincinnati

I completely understand how you feel. I am currently working from home as a patient services expert for a contact center, but my goal is to become a virtual assistant. I think you should look that up it’s a really great industry. In the mean time of building up clientele you can get a work from home job.

I was a single mother for over a decade and understand your ambitions and frustrations! Have you thought about earning a technical certificate or finishing a degree? I was able to complete my associates without any financial debt because my grants covered 100% of my tuition and I was able to work on campus for work/study. Much later, I returned to school to earn my Bachelors. While I did have to take out some loans, I had earned some scholarships and grants during the 6 years it took me to finish. Transitions are scary, but so worthwhile! You already have some amazing goals in place, at that's always the 1st step!

I know how you feel. I too am a single mom with a young son and it's hard. I was injured this past January and was put on light duty. Unfortunately my position now is not a stable position. My advice is to write down your skills and any educational background you have. Then make a plan. What job do you want? What are you qualified to do? Are you willing to work anywhere you can until you get that dream job? Start sending out resumes. As for your vehicle I am not sure. Things have changed. I remember back in my 20s the careerlink office helped you get a vehicle but now I am not sure. As for vacations I have a savings account and try to put a little bit of money in from each paycheck. Just an idea.
