I am applying for a new job and don't have a firm "Former Boss" reference to include. For context, I am in my mid-30s and have worked in a professional setting for the past 15 years. But I have only worked for three organizations in the 15 years.
In the first job, I was fired for making an awful mistake and trying to cover up for it. I was young, naive, and trying to save my ass. I completely messed up and would 100% admit to my mistake if asked about it.
In my second job, I was laid off from the position. We had a new CEO come in, and she let me go within a month of her being there. I was upset about her decision and did not leave on good terms with her. She became a big bully, and most of my colleagues have since quit that company.
I have been at my current job for three years and am applying for a new position at a new company. Luckily my current job didn't ask about my references when I was hired. But I'm nervous this place will, and I don't have a good "manager" type of references to include.
So who should I include, and what reasons do I give if asked about my choice of references?
UPDATE: I went through three interviews and two special projects, and they told me they loved me and needed to do a reference check. During the interview, my work history or reasons for leaving never came up from them. So I provided them four colleagues/ mentors/ etc. but left off any former managers. I was informed last night they were not moving forward with my application in a very form email way.

Do people respond to your thank you notes after an interview?
I’m in the middle of a job search, and send thank you notes after each interview to everyone I meet with. However, for the first time in my career, I have people responding back to my thank you notes, which is lovely but it makes me wonder is this now an uncommon practice and that’s why people are responding? Even if it is outdated, I’m pretty sure I’m going to continue doing so if only out of habit.

Five years ago today, I filed for unemployment compensation.
It was one of the hardest things I've done, professionally. I had been let go with very little warning by a supervisor who just couldn't be pleased. The organization offered no constructive feedback, no mentoring, and no work/life balance. The days immediately after that were a mix of fear and relief that I was out of that awful environment. I won't lie. I spent six very hard, discouraging months looking for a role and being rejected before I took a "survival job." I spent about 18 months there until a position in the agency where I had always wanted to work opened. I got it and just celebrated my third anniversary here. I've even been promoted and am now in the position I wanted most. I shared this in the hope that someone who is facing the same thing right now will read it and know that things won't always be as hard as they are today. In the meantime, take care of yourself and your family, and remember that work is what you do, not who you are. You are worthy and valuable, no matter where you do (or don't) work.

Question for employers, hiring managers, recruiters, and those in charge of conducting job interviews: would you ever consider implementing any of the following practices when preparing to schedule an interview?
• Providing the questions you intend to ask the applicant in advance so that they have time to prepare
• Allowing the applicant to choose which interview format they prefer (phone call, video call, video call platform with camera off, etc.)
If not, why not? Trying to gather information for a research project.
