I was recently laid off, along with other people at my company, while taking FMLA to care for my husband who has Stage IV cancer, recently had surgery, and is about to undergo radiation and chemotherapy treatments for 6 weeks.
I was stunned by this but learned that it is legal if a company bases its decision on business downturns or other reasons unrelated to the employee needing FMLA. Still, it seems so cruel considering my circumstances. None of us had any warning that this was coming, and our work and company connections ended immediately after we were told. The severance package is minimal, and my health insurance ends on Nov. 30. Has anyone experienced this? How did you handle it, emotionally more than financially? We're looking into every possible resource we can, but I'm wrestling with whether to express my thoughts to the company about their decision.

Honestly companies only care about the bottom line, employees are just an expense, contrary to the family kumbaya BS they try to portray. Unfortunately the numbers do not care about what an employee has going on in their personal life. Most likely your direct manager had zero say about it
