Can they get away with asking this offensive interview question?
I'm a very personal person and I like to keep to myself. Yet I don't think my reaction to this question is unwarranted.
For context: I'm in my late 20s and currently interviewing for my next position. During my last interview, the hiring manager had the audacity to ask me whether I was planning on starting a family.
We were still in the "small talk" part of the interview, but the question struck a chord. I felt targeted for my gender, and I don't feel like the question is at all relevant to my talent and what I can bring to the company. The rest of the interview did not go well because I was so upset.
Am I overreacting, or are hiring managers allowed to ask these types of questions? How am I supposed to respond?
