Should I wear a Headset For a Video Interview?

I’m preparing for video interviews and I am wondering what the FGB community thinks of wearing a headset for an interview. To be clear my headset is a basic over ear headphones with mic combo. Not a gaming headset to be clear! Through some experimentation I’ve concluded that my headset delivers the best sound and others can hear me best. However some are saying that a headset doesn’t look professional. I suppose I could just use my ear buds. It may look better but the sound quality goes down. I’m wondering - What do you think? Is a headset acceptable for a video conference interview?

You should do what makes you feel most comfortable! I think interviewers are much more open to having a good, quality connection with you as opposed to what you look like on screen! Good luck with the interview!

Definitely! If it makes communication better, go for it. I have seen presenters in conferences wear them so they are the new normal.

Thanks Anne. I appreciate your feedback. I think I was getting outdated / pre-covid info.

It's important to hear and be heard clearly. So use the headset. You won't look strange or unprofessional in this new reality.

Headsets are a new normal in these times, agreed with comments above saying it's more about what you have to say than your headset appearance. Best wishes on the interviews!

I understand how you feel. I’m not a fan of headsets either. On zoom/Skype calls I actually have a Jabra speakerphone 410 that’s hands free. You can plug it into your laptop and the sound quality is great!! I’ve had people complain about how clear when I type and almost blow their ears out. It cost around $100, but it was a great investment.

agreed. The most important thing is to hear, and be heard clearly. I don't even think you need to explain--the meetings I'm in- lots of folks are wearing them. We're all working from home, and many don't have private offices. Best of luck.

Thank you Judy. I agree - I felt uncomfortable compromising how I looked to how I sounded. Knowing opinions from different professions has been helpful. Thanks again for your response.

It is more important they hear what you have to say.

In the new world of constant video calls, headsets look perfectly professional, as they are a sign that you want to achieve the best audio quality you can.

Agree with Joanna! I feel like times are changing with more people working from home for an extended period of time. If this provides you the best sound quality, I'd say go for it.

Absolutely agree with Joanna! The spoken content is still the most important thing. The Video is just an additional benefit.
