COVID's Impact on Job Searching

I've been at my full-time retail job for the past two and a half years, and was told at the beginning of the month our US store operations will be closing at the end of the year. Therefore, all on-site employees, including myself, are getting laid off. To be honest, I wasn't surprised this would be happening seeing how hard the retail industry has been hit by COVID-19, but processing the shock is still taking time. I've been wanting to make a career change recently, and have been applying to jobs constantly since August. Only less than five companies came back to me with interviews, and I've already applied to over 100 jobs. Is anyone else in a similar situation? How have you been persevering and what do you do for self-development while you're not searching for jobs?

Hi Haley, I understand a little how you're feeling. Although I'm not in retail, I have been spending much of 2020 looking for new opportunities. I'm currently in-between roles. I've been doing a ton of virtual networking and offering to help others as much as I can. One thing that's kept me busy has been skills-based volunteering through Catchafire. There are other platforms that do similar work, like Volunteer Match. It's a good way to practice some new skills while helping out nonprofit orgs, who are also having a really tough time now. Good luck!

Thank you Emily, I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this challenge. I will definitely look into those platforms to keep me busy... Best of luck to you as well!
