How is this even possible - Failure of leadership

I work for a mid size organization that has a long history. We had a company event over zoom today and one of the areas the executive leadership (all white 50-70 year old people) tried to talk about was culture and diversity. It was absolutely awful. They talked about how we can’t hire minorities because of our suburban location, how minorities don’t want to work in publishing, and how they are open to hiring black people! It was crazy how out of touch they are. They started to talk about how our culture isn’t a good fit for minorities because we are so academic and how not every company can be diverse. We don’t have a corporate culture unless “ancient, old fashioned and white” is a culture. You could tell someone told them to have this event and they are not smart enough to hire someone who knows about this stuff. We don’t have an inclusion or diversity officer, we don’t even have anyone who identified as a minority in HR. I already have started to look for a new job, I have been looking since January, this place is insane. It’s privately owned so no shareholders, I am 49 and I cannot believe the VP of HR made a statement that black people don’t want to work in publishing. I think he is just absolutely clueless.

If it is possible to recommend a D&I trainer to your HR org, please reach out to me directly. I know someone who is awesome and who I believe they will listen to.

We don’t even have a formal HR person, she also does accounting. They would never spend money on a trainer.

Hearing this is very disappointing but the reality in many work places. We’re so similar yet so different. Some companies are not handling diversity and inclusion very well and don’t care to expand their awareness. You’ll find something else soon enough—I commend you for making a plan to leave. Integrity and cultural fit matter. Black Lives Matter

I have mixed feelings about this being an impetus to "looking." You clearly are on the side of diversity and inclusion (as we all should be), and they are clearly not and have MANY things to learn. While I understand the desire to jump ship to a company that doesn't have people who think this way, the problem I foresee is that they will ultimately hire people who think THEIR way, or hire someone who then feels the need to swallow this crap to make a living. We might be in the time of the great reckoning, but we also have mass unemployment and people have been known to eat their integrity when given a choice between that and rent. I would consider whether it's worth it to you and beneficial to your career to approach them with what's going on in the world and how they are setting themselves up for giant, cancel culture-worthy failure and that perhaps you can help them make a new direction for themselves.

Wow. Horrifying, disgusting, and heartbreaking. They've revealed themselves to you and your colleagues. Believe that they're exactly what they've shown you they are and get as far away from them as possible. Exit interviews are great, but from feedback I've received from managers after they've read them, they never believe what's been said. HR can try to make changes based on exit interviews, but (at least in a small company like mine) they have to have buy-in from upper management. In this case, the best hope for the company is for some of the old regime to retire and be replaced with people who are more in tune with the real world.

Oooof. Good idea to start looking. I'd be sure to share my thoughts on this in an exit interview, but tactfully so as to not burn bridges!

Definitely not a conscious company. Time to take some learning from the situation and see what else is available that's more on your wavelength.

This is, in a word, HORRIFYING. Due to one of my previous jobs I am familiar with older, white professionals in areas of major leadership being out of touch and it can be incredibly discouraging. It sounds like outside of obviously how problematic the conversation was, that the other major concern here is how much work and effort it would take to turn the work culture around. I applaud you for putting your foot down and finding a different work place, get out of there asap!!
