Do you set professional goals for yourself?

Remember small, consistent action is what will get you to the finish line. How are you measuring the action steps you take to get toward your goals? I like to do a monthly, weekly and daily assessment. Getting clear on what you need to accomplish and then noting what worked, what didn't work and what you can do differently will help you achieve your goal!

I do! I always have goals. I will spend my time differently if I want to get promoted to the next rank up in my current position in hopes of managing a team (e.g. VP of Clinical to SVP of Clinical -- this involves buckling down and really specializing) vs. if I am looking to work in a broader position (e.g. moving from being VP of Clinical to a VP position that encompasses both Clinical and Regulatory -- I would train in the new competency I want to add). Knowing what you want your next step to be, even if it's years away, helps you decide where to focus your energy and whether you want to focus on growing your existing skills further vs. branching out into new skills. It's also possible to focus on personal goals. Maybe you want to learn to function better while doing your job, rather than trying to change how you do your job itself. For example: Maybe you want to learn to experience less stress at work/manage your stress better. Maybe you want to work on being more assertive. Maybe you want to work on better work/life balance (e.g. making time to exercise daily). It's pretty hard to achieve a goal that you haven't chosen and explicitly called out, though, so whatever goal you want to pursue, I encourage you to articulate it do whatever it takes to remember what it is. Tell your supervisor. Tell your colleagues. Make a note to yourself on a bulletin board. Remember!

Acacia, reading about your goals is getting me super excited about achieving my own! I can tell how you have really set them with intention and clarity. You are right, it is pretty hard to achieve a goal that you haven't chosen and ask for accountability.

I have both tangible defined progressional goals (i.e., expanding platform knowledge) along with softer goals related to mentoring teammates. The tangible goals are formally captured within my performance reviews. When projects and timelines get super stressed, I revisit my goals, as they remind me why I do what I do - this act served to ground me in my resolve to push forward. I am very fortunate to be in a position doing what I love and excel at for a company that I respect.

That is fabulous! I love the combination of the tangible and softer goals, they are equally important. Using them as a goal post to keep you posted while you are in stressful times is brilliant.
