How can I ask for an exception to the parental leave policy?
It provides 8 weeks of paid leave only for employees with 1 year of service, which is apparently very good for our nonprofit industry. I have been working full-time as a contractor with the company for 6 months and they are doing the paperwork to bring me on full-time. Depending on when that happens, I will have been with them (either contractor or full-time) for 10 months by the time I give birth and need to take leave. How can I negotiate this? They haven’t even shared what the salary is but this is really my only option for now, and there was a round of layoffs 4 months ago. In an initial conversation, my manager seemed disappointed that I would not be eligible for paid leave but I don’t want that to be the end of the story!
