I lost a job due to downsizing in December of 2019. I was told it was necessary b/c of cost containment for the University I worked for. I had been there almost 10 years as a contract faculty and thought my job was secure. I had put in the work to prove I was a valuable employee. This news came to me the day after I turned 60. What a shock and right before Christmas also. I found out later that other faculty members who had only been there 1 year and two years did not loose their positions. My experience helped to secure another position but I am still recovering from the loss and adapting to a new job. I have to go through the process of proving my worth in the environment that is hostile to older workers. I feel pressure to show others that I have the knowledge and capability to keep up with younger workers. Instead of feeling the rewards of a long and satisfying career, the opposite is happening where I am discouraged and ready to just give up.
