Five Problems with Virtual Communication - Round up
The way we form and relationships in the digital world is different than real life. It may be easier for some people or some generations to form, build and sustain trust in the virtual world, but not for all. There are significant social norms that would have to be adapted. When something threatens the trust in a virtual relationship, it can all but fall apart. And for a relationship whose trust is at risk, it is difficult to rebuild. In a face to face relationship when trust is questioned, it may rock back and forth, but hopefully soon enough the perpetrator apologizes and trust is restored. If most of our relationships are virtual, the fragility of those relationships may make you less able to get through the difficulties that all relationships endure. The minimal personal relationships are not strong enough to withstand the uncertainty and fragility of the virtual world.
