Hello, Fellow FGBers!
I was wondering if a human resources expert, or anyone who relies on ATS results at the initial stages of hiring, can answer my question. That question is, how important is it to use keywords from a job ad in your cover letter, meaning, how closely does an ATS scrutinize keywords contained in this document? I have several different versions of my resume that speak to different levels of seniority/responsibility expressed in a job posting/job title, so I do not feel the need to tear up a resume I consider to be completely appropriate for the role by copying and pasting key phrases from the posting into the resume. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I feel that takes too much time--I end up practically rewriting the entire resume and then enter the sphere of Overwhelm. Hardly efficient! While all my resumes are accomplishment driven, I rely on the cover letter to sell myself and my skill set by echoing statements, phrases and requirements in the job description right into the cover letter. Does the ATS even scan the cover letter, or is it simply a personal introduction read by the human being who eventually, if one is lucky, receives the application for review?
I would SO appreciate some insights into this situation! Thanks in advance!
