Ice breaker/games for Zoom/Virtual Meetings

I'm looking for any ice breakers or games to do on Zoom/virtual meetings. What are some of your favorites?

Scavenger Hunt! A few seconds to find random stuff in house. It can be funny and a good change of pace from looking at a screen.

I recently started a new job with virtual onboarding and have never been to my office. A few icebreakers I've used in team video calls are: 1. What hobbies/things do you find yourself doing more of during this time? (Answers usually are: Reading more, new hobbies, art/ doodling, playing with the kids etc.) 2. What new shows are you watching on Netflix/ Prime /other channels these days? (nearly everyone has a subscription) 3. This is for colleagues in other countries. What new things have you been able to do with the lockdown ending/ being lessened. So my boss in Europe told us how she had finally gone to the hairdresser and a restaurant !

Depends on how long you have, but a Kahoot trivia game is always fun and funny or trivia in any way. Guessing games about co-workers (baby pics, prom pics, etc) or the already suggested two truths and a lie. Also give a theme to the meeting - dream vacation background, silly hair, crazy hat, pajama meeting...

In small groups, I like to do a few rounds in breakouts of 2, and ask people to find 3 things they have in common, then share those back to the large group. (And those things can't be basics like "we both work for the same company" or "we're both women.") I've had people find out they're from the same town, people discover they share the same favorite band, and things like that.

We are about to do our staff retreat fully online. One of the things the committee did was give us pre-work. We shared 3 photographs that show us outside of work. We also shared a recipe that was important to us or a favorite and the option of a picture. Today I went to look at the site and it was so great to get a glimpse of who everyone is outside of work. While I've known some of my colleagues for over a decade, some started during the pandemic so I've never met them in person.

Great idea! Love that!! And what exactly occurs during a staff retreat? That seems interesting!

Every year is different. We have a staff of around 40 total between two offices. There is a volunteer committee of staff each year. Typically part of it is fun/team building (we've done volunteering, game show rooms, escape rooms, etc.),part is some kind of training (work styles assessments, cultural IQ assessments), and then there is a purely social piece. Doing this all virtually has changed things a bit this year.

I've never heard of this before, this is great!! Do you all typically do the retreat in one day?

Some of the ice breakers my team have used (and I appreciate the sense of hope and morale it instills at this time): - What is something you're looking forward to? - What is something you're grateful for?

I love those!! Thank you! And yes that sense of hope and morale is so important right now. In the beginning of our meetings (when I don't have an icebreaker/game), I'll ask what was your win this week/month?

One of the ice breakers I appreciate, whether in a conference room or on a conference call is "2 Truths and a Lie" where each person shares 3 things - 2 of them True, 1 a Lie and the rest of the group votes (thumbs up for True, thumbs down for Lie); after voting on all 3 (which usually gets mixed votes), the person explains the story behind the weird Truths or why they picked the Lie. It helps the group understand a bit about each person's background and their sense of humor (and how well they can Lie). Try it!
