Maternity leave & job offers?

I have an interview coming up online, and if I go further the other ones are likely to be online as well. If things go well and I was given an offer this month or next, should I wait to tell them I am pregnant at offer stage or when? I'm trying to plan things ahead. I'm due in Sept. So there's only 2 months in between for me to actually work before I take maternity leave. I don't currently have maternity leave benefits from my current employer but if I joined this new company then I would have excellent leave benefits. To clarify, if given an offer I would join because I genuinely like the company and job, not simply for the leave benefits! The leave benefits would be a relief to have though. What would you do in this situation if an offer was extended?

Legally, you do not have to provide that information to a company before an offer has been made. It is illegal to discriminate against a woman for being pregnant and basing the hiring decision upon that alone. Depending on the company that you work for and the state you reside in, maternity leave may or may not be offered as a part of the benefits program unless you have worked there for 1200 hours the previous 12 months and it is rolled up into their FMLA package. Have you read the fine print to make sure all of your bases are covered?

Thanks for the tip. I did not know that there could be a requirement to work a certain number of hours before eligible for maternity leave. I will be sure to check that.

Until there is legislation that covers all women that need maternity leave, generally speaking, companies will include the leave in FMLA's standard 12 weeks of leave. I have had to take maternity leave twice. Louisiana has a 6 week unpaid maternity leave that I was allowed to take when I had not been with the company long enough to be covered with Short Term Disability insurance and FMLA. The second leave I took 10 weeks because I had to have an emergency surgery to have a cyst removed in my neck. Check your state leave laws for maternity leave, too. Congratulations on the new baby. Being a mother is the most rewarding job you will ever have.
