(Wo)men supporting women

What is your best example of other women (or men) having supported you? Was there an opportunity where you wish other women (or men) had supported you?

My male manager supported me against the toxic environment my female senior colleague kept creating. I’m very grateful to my manager. Once he decided to leave and my senior colleague became my interim manager, she began taking projects away from me where I was getting amazing feedback and bullying me on calls. I had to leave in a couple months.

Years ago I worked for a woman who was wonderful, kind and very supportive of me, my work, and my personal life. We worked well together and the relationship was more collegial. We did great work together and it was one of the best times I had while working for Bristol-Myers Squibb. During our tenure together, my brother-in-law was in a horrible plane crash and my boss was there for me. I immediately dropped my life and flew to the west coast to be with my sister and BIL. During the months of going back and forth between the east and west coast, my boss included me, made me feel like an important team member though I wasn't always paying attention, and always supported me and stepped in to help when I needed it. We became personal friends over the years but I will never forget her generosity, pure kindness, and how she made me feel included.

The first manager I worked for as a contractor at Microsoft was very supportive of me and did everything she could to advance my career, include recommending me for an FTE position at Microsoft in her group. Thanks to her I made the transition from contract to full time.

I'm not sure if this counts but my old boss was supportive of my career goals and even though I was the most senior member of the team, she was sad but happy to help try and connect me to those in my field that she knew.

Absolutely counts! My old boss provided me with growth opportunities and connected me to senior people even when doing so was not necessarily supportive of his goals.

My best example of woman supporting women is when someone asks a female or female group for a professional referral (attorney, accountant, doctor), then 2 different female names are given.

Yes, it’s wonderful when women and minorities get access to the referral network!

Most recently, as I get ready for the launch of my book The Grit Factor, two different women I didn't know from one of the networks I participate in reached out and asked if they could set up events to promote the book (and the content). Honestly, it was incredibly unselfish and supportive, and I'm incredibly grateful-- especially as launching a book in the midst of a pandemic is pretty tricky!

Congratulations on the book launch! Out of curiosity, do you mind sharing what the networks were and how you came to find them?
