I am interviewing for a job, but I am trying to leave a very bad employer; do I worry or trust they won't say anything bad.
Any advice?

If I am leaving a position or applying elsewhere, I always select the option not to contact my current employer.

Are you worried the hiring manager/company will call your current employer for background check? Depending on state, the most a company can say is if you work there, dates of employement. There are so many employment lawsuits these days that companies have to protect themselves.

Be papered, and let your knowledge skills, and ability (KAS) speak for themselves. The most they will ask your previous employer are you eligible for rehire and what period did you work. One of your interview questions may be why did you leave your previous employer? You can say some short and to the point. To advance and enhance my skills. I hope this helps?

As an HR professional, all I have ever been allowed to say is employment dates and position. I won't answer the question about rehire either since it can be taken negatively. I also don't respond to verbal requests to confirm the employment history. It has to be an emailed or faxed request to remove any favorable or unfavorable bias that could be construed from a phone call.
