Adding this odd experience landed me a job after a 4+ month search
After months and months of job searching, I shared my resume with a concerned friend. She asked me why I hadn't included that I had a baking side hustle a few years back. I was applying for HR jobs and thought it was completely irrelevant and even a little juvenile. But when I got yet another rejection, I added the experience — and got an interview, then the job. The hiring manager was intrigued by the experience and had me speak to the skills I'd learned while managing the side hustle. There were many more applicable skills than I originally thought!
I'm sharing this because sometimes those unexpected, odd experiences can stand out. We learn something from everything we do, so it's important to learn to apply your skills to all different areas.
Have you included something like this on your resume or discussed an odd , seemingly irrelevant experience in an interview? What unconventional experiences make you stand out?
