How do you view your career differently?

I have never appreciated my career more than over the past few months. The gratitude I feel to be able to still work remotely is something I definitely didn't fully appreciate a before. Im curious to hear what perspective or aspect of your career you appreciate more now?

Thank you for your post. As a business leader, I have shared several messages of gratitude with my staff. I am grateful that we are all able to work remotely and continue to do meaningful work. I was invited to give opening remarks at a conference and rather than discuss the response to COVID-19, I talked about the importance of expressing gratitude, kindness, and joy. It was likely the most popular presentation I have shared. I have seen a renewed sense of gratitude and appreciation for the small stuff across the organization. I host monthly lunches with small groups of employees each month. We continue to do this virtually. During these lunches, I invite folks to offer suggestions of things they’d like to see changed/improved. One employee was particularly critical during last month’s lunch, and three other attendees complained about it to our HR Director. The HR director reached out to me to share the concerns and I had to laugh. I don’t think this employee was any more critical than others have been in the past. The difference this time was that others were quick to point out all the good things we have in place that countered the critical suggestions. I am indeed experiencing a renewed sense of gratitude across the organization.

Thank you for sharing! I absolutely love that you shared a keynote on gratitude instead of COVID-19. A lot of things I have been listening int/calling into are inundated with only talking about the virus...(its hard not to) I love that you shared something you learned from this experience, not just the experience itself. Hopefully we can all take a lesson from you and share a little more gratitude to those around us.

I’m an essential worker for a bank, however I am in a back office department. I come to work everyday and all I need is my phone and computer. I had a talk with my boss on 3/23 and asked if there were any long term plans to get my team of analysts and myself laptops to work remotely. I knew others had received phones and vpns, and I was basically laughed off. My boss said there were only 40 and they were for those who are critical to the operational function. I understand the priory basis however I don’t think they are thinking long term. If we can do our jobs at home why add extra people to the mix? To add insult to injury, they emailed our customers an update on what we are doing to keep us and others safe and under the employee section they claimed “we are allowing employees to work from home whenever possible”.

I can see how this mixed messaging would be frustration. That must be difficult to work through. Perhaps you could share the email back with supervisor and express your concerns about not working remote. If you put a plan in place (schedule, check-ins, etc.) on how remote work would look for your team this may put them at ease as well.

Great suggestion - I was planning on putting together something along those lines. I also want to wait for a more clear timeline from government officials so I can say “this will last through X date”

I am in a "critical infrastructure" industry so we're not fully required to remote work. I completely appreciate all the work our food manufacturers are doing to keep us all fed during this time. Wearing a mask, plus a bump cap, hair net, beard net, etc is a challenge! My appreciation for the work they do has grown by leaps and bounds!
