Jobless Again

So I have found myself laid off for a second time this year from the same place because we aren’t getting enough work again. I am at a loss because my small town boasts few options for work that are consistent or secure at all. Honestly not sure if. I am looking for advice or support at the moment. I just needed to get it off my chest.

Sorry that you are going through this. I am originally from a small town and know the challenges it can cause. One question. Since many companies are allowing more remote work, are you close enough to a larger city to be able to commute in one or two days a week, when people eventually return to the office? If so, consider applying to jobs there. In the meantime, this article was shared a few days ago on another FGB posting and it might be helpful. https://chasingourfinancialfreedom.com/side-hustle/

Unfortunately not. It takes anywhere from 1-2 hours and the buses don’t even come up here. We have only local public services that are extremely limited.

Yes, sounds like where my spouse wants us to move "temporarily"...I am having a difficult time agreeing, he may be going on his own. No buses, no entertainment (I am not that old yet), medical care is 2 mountains away, etc. I am not too happy right now. Thanks for letting me vent.

Yeah I definitely understand that feeling. We don't have mountains but the closest healthcare outside the tiny clinic is about 30mns away if you have a car. Hopefully it's super temporary and you get somewhere else or he finds someplace better.

Sorry to hear this, it is terrible. We retired from the military, right at the start of the recession. I have suffered tremendously since, more ways than one can imagine. What I would like to share is you said the area you live is a small town, laid off again, etc. If you are able, perhaps a change of scenery is in order. That is and was my problem, ny background and this area are not a fit for me. Last kid moved out, so I need to make a plan.

I'm sorry Katrina. Losing your job is scary, frustrating and can be a blow to your ego so all the emotions you are feeling are raw and extreme. I agree with Rachael, what COVID has done is eliminated the need for you to limit your opportunities to those you can commute to. Many companies aren't even going to go back to in office work at all. Start exploring opportunities outside of your direct proximity. There is a job site called FlexJobs.com that actually is for exactly that, WFH options. Good luck and keep your head up!

Sorry for the layoff! But one thing Katrina, keep your head high and work on yourself. This is the best for self-exploration as well. Good Luck!

I'm sorry to hear that you were laid off. Times are tough for a lot of companies. However, one thing that is becoming more prevalent and might work to your advantage is remote work/telecommuting. I think this is the best way to open more opportunities for yourself without having to relocate. Best of luck!
