Applying for job with major salary jump - how to word in application?
I am applying for a job that I am qualified for and think I have a 80% chance of landing an interview for. It is in a similar role to my current role, but a slightly different industry (moving from government CAO to non-profit CEO). My current salary is $78,000 with no benefits. The incumbent leaving the role I want to apply for is earning $230,000 plus benefits, and her VP is earning $160,000 plus benefits. I've viewed the application process and it requires me to fill out an online form (for the HR search firm they are using to recruit) providing 3 items: 1) The Lowest salary I'll accept. 2) The high end of the range that I'm seeking. 3) Space is provided for a few sentences if I need to add any details. This is uncomfortable, for obvious reasons, but also because I am a firm believer to always let the other side make the first offer in a negotiation.
I believe I won't be interviewed if I leave the salary information blank; and I believe I will be at a huge disadvantage if they learn my current salary level (which is unfortunately public information) because it is so far lower than that of the incumbent... $78K vs $230K. Honestly, I'd be thrilled to get the job and would accept far less than what the current gal earns - but still hope for a sizable increase over my current level. How do you recommend I fill out this online application in regards to their three salary questions?
