3.5 months ago I spoke with my director (at the time she was my direct manager while my manager was on leave) about promotion and growth opportunities.
She was supportive and shared with me her plans to create a new role in the department which would open up a lower level managerial role. She clearly stated that she saw me progressing to the lower level manager role and she told me that it would be posted in two-three weeks. A month later the job was not posted. When I asked, she stated the delay was due to her senior VP’s new start date ( the senior VP had been working remotely for months but was returning to in person work). She told me her plans had not changed but were delayed for 2-3 more weeks. A month later, I’ve learned from executive level staff that the position was created and approved by the senior VP. I was told by other executive level staff that I was specifically discussed based on my work outcomes, tenure, partnership, etc. My director told these other executives that she would promote me, but has said and done nothing with me regarding this. Meanwhile, I’m being asked to do tasks at a level of management that does not fit my title by executives who think that I’m in the process of being promoted. I truly believe that my director felt pressured to promote me to a higher position than she would have chosen for me, so she’s passively aggressively not acting on it. I feel stuck. I believe that I absolutely deserve the management position the executives want me to have, but I know that my director is not going to be straightforward with me or the executives about what she’s doing. The answer for me right now isn’t to go get another job. I’m good at my work, the pay is excellent and I’ve got a proven track record of success. I feel disheartened and exhausted by this whole experience. Can anyone give me some advice?
