Marketing Manager... but unemployed

I have been unemployed for over a year and I don't really understand why I can't get a job. Like others I have applied to numerous positions, and I interview often. Can it all be because I don't always ace the interview? When does having applicable experience on my resume, an MBA, and my own company not good enough for the job? I'm active in my community and I have great references, but I don't get past the interview stage. I guess my question is, how can I get better at interviewing? Please help?

I am really impressed at the level of response people give on this website. Thank you everyone for your feedback!

Hi Jessica -- It’s not you, it's just a touch market. It's a full-time job when you are looking for job. Try to get feedback from the recruiters on why you didn’t get the position. This will help with future opportunities. Though, sometimes it's out of your control – the organization had to go with an internal candidate, there is a hiring freeze, etc. Keep going.

Oh if only I could get feedback! I usually ask the recruiter and the person I interviewed for feedback, or advice, but I have never once gotten a response. I don't blame them. I was told once they can't because they could get sued.

Most large companies take a stance that they won't provide feedback because of the potential liability but also because it can be really time consuming. I'm not saying it the right approach but yes, there is a legal component.

Hello Jessica, I would be happy to help, if you would like to mock interview. Send me a recent job description you have applied for and your resume and I'd be happy to spend a 1/2 hour or so with you. Just be open to some real, honest, feedback from someone who doesn't know you at all.

I would add to Kripa's good advice above, find someone who will be absolutely honest with you. Then listen.

I like the reframing that Aly suggests above. I also wonder if you are unintentionally coming across as a candidate that is just trying to "get in the door" and perhaps not committed to the specific role you're applying for. When I interview, I look for people that are genuinely interested in staying in that role for a while. Are the jobs you're applying for in new fields? If so, can you articulate how eager you are to learn and are you highlighting transferrable skills? Are you asking about pay in the first interview? You strike me as someone who knows to avoid the common mistakes, but it never hurts to think about these things! Good luck

Little bit of a hippie perspective here: are you energetically stopping yourself from getting the job? One of my first thoughts is, deep down, are you interviewing for positions you actually want? While yes, you maybe qualified for the role, is it something you actually want? You mention having your own business, do you actually want to focus on that? Are you aligned with what you truly want? I'm sure lots of others will hop on here with great interview advice but just a different perspective to consider.

It most definitely is a mindset! And at this point I do go into interviews thinking, how lucky would I be to get this job instead of saying, how lucky are THEY to have me, regardless of my qualifications.

Exactly, I'm glad you recognized that mindset issue and I love your reframe. Never hurts to consider the energetics!

Jessica, from your description, looks like you have honed your resume enough to get you invited to the interview stage. That's a good sign. Usually lot of people struggle to get their resumes noticed. I would suggest doing mock interviews - behavioral and technical ones with your former colleagues/well-wishers/friends. You need to pick 1-2 mentors who will not hesitate to give you candid feedback on whats missing. Hope this helps
