What Ideas Do You Have?

With yet at least another month without playgrounds, zoos, pools and places of fun for young children, what are you doing to keep your children engaged and not glued to their screens?

Poker. Before I get on-line scolded for promoting gambling, we play for chips, pretzels, peanuts; whatever is available. When our kids were young we started easy with 21 and moved up in complication from there. Believe it or not , it promotes math skills, memory and everyone loves it. The kids had to learn to count in their heads and eventually learned about things like statists and probability, and we always shared and snacked on our winnings. My oldest used to get much satisfaction from his large pile of pretzels while my youngest was always nibbling on his “currency”. Many happy memories were made over math lessons disguised as poker. Good luck.

I have been playing "don't let it touch the ground" with my sisters since we've been little kids. Just get a few balloons, some rackets if you have them (or you can make a racket out of cardboard) and volley the balloon back and forth not letting it touch the ground. My son and I have played this in limited space (NYC apartment) and even as a teenager. Who can resist a balloon coming at them with the chant "don't let it touch the ground!" It's at least a 5-7 minute game.

We love making board games. Simpler ones for younger children and more elaborate, advanced ones for older ones. You can get as creative as you want, then you also have something to do once the game is made!

I have elementary school kids, we made time to learn simple skills like sewing ? it is extremely calming and it keeps them focusing on the task. They drew their design and then made a few outfits for their dolls...they like it so much they continue to do it with out my input. It can come handy to know how to fix your clothing or sew a button.

Hi Linda, Great question! I've ordered monthly STEAM and STEM kits for my Grands...they love it and it keeps them busy! There are quite a few companies that offer these.....

Water balloons! We obviously throw them at each other, but we’ve invented new games, too. Target throwing...we drew a target in the side of our garage in chalk and had contests of who could score the most. We also had objects that we placed all around the backyard that we tried to hit for points. Then there’s water ballon smash. We have tennis rackets, since the courts are closed, why not?! And we would try to smash as many as we could with the racket as they were thrown at us. We do this while sitting in chairs and running. My kids have races & competitions to see who can fill the most up, the fastest. It occupied their time filling them up, we as an entire family can play all of the games and since it’s getting hotter, it’s refreshing!
