I recently had an interview with an employer who asked me if I could use a certain data collection program. In a moment of panic, I said "I can't." While I tried to recover and say that I was a fast learner, I was ultimately rejected from the job. When I asked what I could have done better in the interview, the hiring manager said they were looking for someone with a certain set of skills.
Using the word "can't" immediately shut down the interviewer and definitely hurt my chances at the job. In the future, I think I'll start by saying I'm a fast learner and that I could use the program quickly.
