Why I work

"Mama, why you workin?" - my 2.5 year old son. As a working Mom, I am used to being asked why I work. In truth, I am used to being judged about my choice to work (a choice I am privileged to make). There are two things I know. ?We are not accountable to other people's opinions of us. ?The example we set for our children is everything. Over the last 5 months of working and parenting from home ALL the time, my son has asked me this question a few times. He is 2.5 and knows his Mama works. I believe in helping women step into their power as leaders. I believe in helping women achieve their biggest goals (in and out of the office). I believe you cannot have it all at the same time everyday, but you can create your day in a way that makes reaching personal and professional goals not only possible, but likely. I believe in supporting women and the choices they make.

Thank you for sharing this perspective. I have been a WFH parent for the entirety of my sons' lives. Without full day camps and day care, this summer they have been coming to work with me every day, and I have done my best to demonstrate for them a way of life that is uniquely awesome as a parent. I am fortunate to live and work in the same space and to be able to share with them my workday and experiences has (hopefully) modeled for them discipline, collaboration, and an interpersonal style that they can take forward. I am also teaching them to share in responsibility and to respect boundaries necessary for supporting this lifestyle. When I think about it, my sons are surrounded by females who work - their friends' parents, teachers and coaches, neighbors, family members, retailers, my coworkers, etc. I am so grateful. Thanks again for sharing!

I love that perspective. It has to be hard to parent and work from home all the time, not just in season. It sounds like it has been a very rewarding experience for you! Thank you for your thoughts.

Goals should scare a little & excite a lot

Thank you for posting this and setting an example for your son. As a woman who worked when my children were younger (30+ years ago), I was in the minority. I didn’t fit in with my working colleagues as most of them were single and I didn’t fit in with the SAHMoms since I worked. My children (sons btw) learned that a woman can be both - working and a mom. They have both gone on to marry strong women who also work and their children know that mom and dad are their to support them. Working and SAHMs both rock, no matter what choice they make and we should all celebrate that.
