Paper or Plastic or Both?

I just noticed that a company I'm looking at is hiring, and they've posted two positions that 1. I'd like and 2. I'm well qualified for. Is it a bad move to apply for both? Then add a wrinkle - job A could be "a foot in the door" for job B. Is it mistake to reveal this? Thank you so much!

Apply for the job that you are the best fit for. Look at the duties of each and determine which one you're better suited for. If the other is more of a reach then you can get your foot in the door and learn the reach skills while you're working. From there, you'll be able to prove your value and be a shoe-in for the other position.

Different perspective here: which one do you actually WANT? Apply for that one. Depending on how related the positions are the recruiter may consider you for both anyways.

Is there business jargon for "duh"? Thank you - I needed that wake up call.

Hahaha, I think that's the official business term for it :)

I've often seen that the applications for the job you'd "like" are much more genuine and tend to be noticed than just submitting an application for a job that you know you can do. As a Hiring Manager, I want to know that people can do the job, but it's much more important to know will they like doing what they are doing, which would mean that you'll bring energy to the role. Showcase why you're excited about the job (in addition to why you'd be the best candidate and that you can do the work)!

Great advice from Claudia. Also, I've heard that some applicant tracking systems bounce you out when you apply to multiple jobs. I'm assuming it's criteria that the company sets up, but something to be aware of.

For me, I'd rather take Job A. Here's why -- I would rather get to know a company before I commit to a higher level investment. With a "foot in the door", you can get to know the people who work there, learn the structure of the company, and see if you want Job B. I've been in this position. I wanted to work at the place forever, but once I was there, I saw that it was a toxic environment filled with suspicion and judgement. Bleck.

Take job-A because job-B will accept you with open arms but job-A will give you career oriented growth and satisfaction.
