Dream job.... Industry in trouble?!?

I work in IT and have been interviewing for a dream job in my technical area. My concern is that this new role is in Health Care Insurance industry. With the future of the Heathcare Insurance possibly being impacted by Single Payer Heathcare, I'm trying to decide do I make the move. I'd really like to get some insight from those working for Health Insurance companies on how in past the industry has reacted.

Thank You all who have given input. I received a note from the recruiter following up after interviews. Lets hope negotiations go well and I can make this happen.

Glad you asked this question! I happen to work in health insurance and spent 7 years of my career in the IT space. What others said about the skills you gain being valuable regardless are absolutely on point. Once you have experience in health tech with an insurer, you will have a lot of doors open for you. Also, the ‘Medicare for All’ proposals still keep commercial insurance in place. It is a bit of a misnomer to call it a single payer system like you might see in the UK (where, by the way, a number of my former colleagues are working on technology teams for the NHS - so even in that scenario their skills are needed). Be aware also that many countries with single payer systems also still have commercial insurance (check out the other countries Aetna is in as an example). It would be worth getting familiar with what government sponsored plans are vs commercial plans so you can speak to it in your interviews if asked. Good luck!

If CMS does move to a single payer source, Healthcare insurance and Healthcare Systems will still need experienced IT consultants/project managers. They will have to integrate all of the systems (ie cerner, epic) into a single IT source or link it. If this is your dream job, why are you letting something that "might happen" impact your now learning experience?

Love this question and love that you're networking to find the answer! Another great way to network and find people that are working in the exact role you're interested in pursuing is the LinkedIn Alumni tool. Psychology shows that people want to relate to other people by having something in common with them. Using the alumni tool to find folks gives you a leg up already, you're both alumni! I have a free quick overview of the tool here: https://www.alybrine.com/LinkedInAlumniTool

It does not matter what happens , health care is still health care, and it will be years before a single pay happens, and there will still be a huge need for IT perhaps more. Go for it, and enjoy it today , let tomorrow take care of itself

The health care industry will give you such a knowledge and skill boost that any other disruption such as single payer will pale in comparison to what you will gain. I don't see a single payer system anywhere close to completion within the decade because of the powerful lobbyist, and insurance giants in the USA. That being said, you're still getting transferrable skill sets and will be able to pivot quickly with the problem solving skills you've acquired.
