Women Empowerment

I don’t understand why in the name of #womensupportingwomen some women are putting their pretty pictures on social media, and tagging more to do the same. How is flaunting pretty poses supporting women. Women empowerment is equal opportunity for women in decision making at all levels. I would rather flaunt my intellect and courage instead of looks in the name of women empowerment. Until we women let go of shallow superficial display of ourself we will never be powerful. Let’s teach our daughters and young girls to put their thoughts and opinions on the table without worrying about their looks, that’s when we will truly be successful in women empowerment. Thoughts?

I have a thumbnail selfie on LinkedIn, and I sometimes wonder if it creates problems: I have salt-and-pepper hair (mostly salt), and we all know how some people react to that. I say this often, but I'll say it again: how I'd love to see age- and appearance-blind hiring. Neither of these have any bearing on intellect, experience, or ability!

I agree wholeheartedly. It is our skill sets, our genius as individuals we need to focus on and raise and praise each other up for those gifts and talents we each possess.

Women feel empowered in many different ways which some it’s feeling beautiful after chemotherapy with a picture and some it’s sharing a diploma graduating with a PHD. However one chooses to feel empowered individually, we as women should support one another.

Hi Rakshan, Yes! we need to support ourselves and each other in concrete ways both publicly and behind the scenes. And, lots of women I've seen posted photos of themselves in a "powerful" stance and calling on others to do the same. Once we learned more about the femicide happening in Turkey (the genesis of the b/w photo movement) many women amended their posts to pay proper attention to the critical issue being raised. I saw this as a real-time example of learning how to be supportive, keep learning, and putting into their beliefs into action on the fly. Each of us has so much to offer, and the more we learn to do this in meaningful way, the better.

I got an article from someone explaining reasoning behind black and white vanity selfie portraits and what they are trying to accomplish but I still don’t see how posting your own selfie is doing any good. In the same Article Brooke Hammerling said it well “I am100 percent for women supporting women, but I don’t understand how a black-and-white vanity selfie does that. If we could do portraits of the women who inspired us, that would be a little bit more in line with what this is trying to accomplish”.

I could foresee vanity posting actually doing more harm How many of us second guess our image Are we pretty enough Good enough Are we to powerful in our image I would much rather draw on accomplishments and my ability to learn When i go to sleep at night i know i didnt make it in the world because of just my image

I agree with you. If we really want to support women, we need to make concrete steps to do this. And if social media is the only way we can do something, then let it be uploading the photos of women who have supported you. Publicly acknowledging women who helped you is more powerful.
