Bad company reviews

I'm in the process of job hunting and reading company reviews both here and on Glassdoor. How much stock do you place in company reviews when job hunting? Do bad reviews alter your decision to apply for an open position?

When reading reviews, try to discern whether the person's negative experience was based on the bad behavior of a boss (can happen anywhere) or a culture that tolerates the bad behavior (red flag).

I read them all. I will add that I place a bit more value on the reviews here on FGB. I also take into account my personal experiences with various industries. For example companies that have retail employees tend to have a high turnover, and a lot of negative reviews. Working retail is tough, the reviews are something I've come to expect. I look for trends in the reviews, is there consistent mention of the Boys club, HR, micro management. I also never assume that I will be the exception.

I definitely would read them, but you have to use your own judgement. The last company I worked for had terrible reviews, like an average 1 star rating. But I liked the experience for the same reason many people hated it. It was essentially a startup, so unreliable, shifting leadership and teams, breakneck speed, super scrappy so many people really disliked the experience. I enjoyed it because I got to have a huge role in their growth and discovered I am good at figuring out the path forward. I would apply and then if you get an offer, see if you can network around to see what you can learn, potentially even (carefully) connecting with former employees.

Agree with trying to network with former employees (or current, if you can, but that's hard with a small company). I found that very helpful when trying to assess the culture at my current workplace, and people were generally willing to be pretty candid.
